The Checkley Collection

Extent

Arrangement
When the collection was received by the Norfolk Record Office, the items contained in MC 2043/1-5, 49-51 were transferred from their original albums into archival box files and the plastic sleeves holding the postcards were replaced with new sleeves of archival quality. This was necessary for the future preservation of the collection, as the condition of some items in the albums was beginning to deteriorate. Because of the volume of material in MC 2043/2-3, 49-51 the pages from each original album have been split between two box files, but the document reference numbers reflect the original albums (e.g. MC 2043/2/1-147 and MC 2043/2/148-310 were originally one album). Some items, obviously once present, were removed from the albums before they were received by the Norfolk Record Office. These are noted as missing in this list.
AdminHistory
Mr Archie Checkley, who worked in a newsagent's shop in Holt, had a keen interest in his native town and amassed a large collection of photographs, postcards, press cuttings and other papers regarding Holt and its surrounding area. He carefully mounted this memorabilia into albums. He was also a keen collector of postcards and assembled three albums of Christmas and new year postcards as well as two albums about Diana, Princess of Wales. For a local newspaper article on Mr Checkley's collection, written in December 1977, see MC 2043/3/191, 909X2 or MC 2043/16, 910X4.
